Signs of Alcohol Addiction

Recognizing the warning signs of alcohol addiction is the first step toward getting help for yourself or someone you care about.

Alcohol addiction, also called alcohol use disorder (AUD), is a chronic relapsing brain disease characterized by compulsive alcohol use, loss of control over intake, and a negative emotional state when not using. It ranges from mild to severe, and even a mild disorder can escalate and lead to serious problems.

According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, approximately 29.5 million Americans ages 12 and older had an alcohol use disorder in recent years. Yet less than 10% of those affected receive any type of treatment.

Understanding the signs of alcohol addiction can help you identify a problem early — whether in yourself, a family member, a friend, or a coworker. Early intervention significantly improves outcomes and can prevent the devastating consequences of untreated addiction.
