Understanding Mental Health

Mental health is just as important as physical health. Learn about common conditions and how to seek help.

Mental health encompasses our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. Mental health also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. It is important at every stage of life, from childhood through adulthood.

Mental health conditions are common — nearly one in five adults in the United States lives with a mental health condition. These conditions are not the result of personal weakness, lack of character, or poor upbringing. They are medical conditions that can be effectively treated.

At BHS, we believe that mental health care should be accessible, compassionate, and free of stigma. Our integrated approach treats the whole person — addressing substance use, mental health, and physical well-being together for lasting recovery.
